Nobel prize awarded for imaging molecules

The 2017 Nobel Prize in chemistry has been awarded to three scientists for improving images made of biological molecules.

Jacques Dubochet, Joachim Frank and Richard Henderson will share the nine million kronor (£831,000) prize.

They were named at a press conference in Stockholm, Sweden.

They developed a technique called cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM), which simplifies the process for looking at the machinery of life.

Spain fears Ebola but government says all under control

Spain is well-equipped to contain the Ebola virus, the government says, but many Spaniards are worried about how the disease is being managed after a nurse became the first confirmed case of the deadly virus being contracted outside Africa.

She is one of six people placed in quarantine since Monday while more than 50 healthcare workers are under observation because of their contact with the nurse and two repatriated Catholic missionaries who died of Ebola in Madrid in August and September.

UN scheme to boost Syrian children’s education given $316m donation

More than $316m (£193m) was pledged on Wednesday to support Syrian children affected by the conflict as part of a UN-led initiative to alleviate the impact of the crisis on young people.

The EU pledged $145m, the US $90m and the UK $81.6m to the No Lost Generation initiative, which was launched last year by a consortium of UN agencies, NGOs and international donors.
