Catalan trial: Big crowds for Artur Mas independence vote case

Thousands of supporters filled the streets outside a court in Barcelona on Monday as the former Catalan president Artur Mas went on trial.

He is accused of involvement in the Spanish region's unofficial vote on independence in November 2014.

Mr Mas is facing accusations of serious civil disobedience after the vote went ahead in defiance of Spain's constitutional court.

Prosecutors are calling for him to be disqualified from office for 10 years.

Greek debt crisis: Eurozone leaders hopeful of deal

Eurozone leaders have broadly welcomed new proposals for Greek reforms amid hopes a deal can be struck within days to stop Greece defaulting on its debt.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said Greece's latest offer constituted "some progress". But she said more work was needed and "time is short".

Greece must repay a €1.6bn (£1.1bn) International Monetary Fund (IMF) loan by the end of the month.

If it fails to do so, it risks crashing out of the euro and possibly the EU.

Spain fears Ebola but government says all under control

Spain is well-equipped to contain the Ebola virus, the government says, but many Spaniards are worried about how the disease is being managed after a nurse became the first confirmed case of the deadly virus being contracted outside Africa.

Teresa Romero is being treated in a Madrid hospital. She is one of six people placed in quarantine since Monday while more than 50 healthcare workers are under observation because of their contact with the nurse and two repatriated Catholic missionaries who died of Ebola in Madrid in August and September.

Five people are hospitalised in Spain after a nurse contracts Ebola in Madrid

Five people have been hospitalised in Spain after a nurse contracted Ebola after caring for a victim transported back from West Africa.

Madrid health officials have released a video of the room being cleaned where the victim died to show precautions are being taken to prevent the virus spreading.

The nurse who tested positive on Monday is the first person to become infected in Europe.

Four others who have been in contact with her are being monitored in hospital including the nurse’s husband.
