Paris Supermaket Attack Hero Lassana Bathily to Get French Citizenship

PARIS — A Muslim immigrant was set to be granted fast-track French citizenship on Tuesday after he hid several Jewish shoppers in a kosher supermarket during a deadly terrorist siege. Lassana Bathily, who was born in Mali, was working at a Hyper Cacher store on January 9 when it was attacked by Islamist gunman Amedy Coulibaly. Four hostages were killed before police shot Coulibaly dead.

The British prime minister, David Cameron, met the Iranian president, Hassan Rouhani, in New York on Wednesday in what marks a milestone in the long-strained relations between London and Tehran.

The meeting - as the two leaders attended the UN general assembly - was the first encounter between an Iranian president and a British prime minister since the 1979 Islamic revolution.

Manuel Valls has used his first visit to Berlin as French prime minister to try to convince Germany that his government is serious about making its economy more competitive, declaring that France “is not the sick child of Europe”.

The German chancellor, Angela Merkel, praised the reforms he outlined, but said it was up to the European commission to judge whether Paris should be granted yet more time to bring its public deficit down to EU treaty limits.
